Solar eclipse in Gemini (1/6/2011)

The eclipse season is here, with three occuring over the next month!

The first eclipse is a south node solar eclipse in Gemini, at 11 degrees. This signals a new door of oppertunity presenting itself to us, depending on where the eclipse falls in our natal charts and which natal planets it aspects.

This eclipse seems like quite a positive one, a positive step forwards after all the hard work since the last solar eclipse in January which was square to Saturn. That seemed to set up a theme of hard work with good rewards to come as a result, setting up firm foundations as a theme of the last six months. Since 25th Jan this year, Saturn has also been retrograde, taking the lessons deep within us as we assess and re-assess whatever task Saturn has us working on, depending on where he is in our natal charts. Now, this eclipse is trine Saturn and Saturn is about to go direct (on 12th June) – another positive step forwards. The areas of life that were at some sort of standstill should start to open up now and heading fowards, that is, if we have been applying work in the right areas of our lives. Saturn rewards clever, responsible, well planned work.

With the eclipse trine to Saturn, this could also indicate a helpful influence from someone in our lives, a Saturnian type of person, an older person, wiser or more knowledgable person, it even could represent a helpful authority. Someone who may be holding the blockade open for us now. It could also represent the inner authority that we discover in ourselves as we guide our lives, sensibly and responsibly, in directions that are good for us and helpful to society.

The Sabian symbol for the solar eclipse degree is “A Black Girl Fights For Her Independence In The City“. This reminds me of someone carving their own path, following the beat of their own drum, standing on their own two feet and claiming their own power as each and every one of us has a right to. There is alot of supression in society as people want to claim and maintain their positions of power, manipulation games played and power abused as power is claimed on purely egotistical terms with no consideration for others or for the environment. But this eclipse could be showing us that we do own our own power, even if we have been told or persuaded differently, and Saturn is the voice inside all of us that wants us to be independant and self-sufficient while still being connected to each other, as long as we do it responsibly. Through this, we are powerful in being centered in ourselves, balanced and heart centered, nothing can manipulate us as we sense what feels right and true, and trust in our inner voice.

The sabian for Saturn’s degree at 10 Gemini is “A Professor Peering Over His Glasses At His Students“. This reinforces the benevolent energy of Saturn in this eclipse, observing how we are progressing with the lessons of work and responsibility for ourselves and for others. We could be tested on how well we can stand on our own two feet and carve our own way in society, shaking off surpression and working towards our independance. Do we blindly follow whatever anyone tells us or persudaes us to think, or do we follow our own inner voice? Do we trust our own inner voice? This is the voice of instinct that ultimately keeps us safe.

The asteroid Pallas Athene is also involved with this eclipse by trine, in the sign of Aquarius and retrograde. Juno is also there by square from Virgo. This is quite interesting when taking account of the sabian symbol of the girl fighting for her independance in the city. It seems to speak so clearly of our inner feminine warrior spirit, maybe showing these energies being grounded more and more in the manifest world. Pallas Athene in the mythic tarot is represented by the major arcana card Justice, the symbol of fairness, balance and independance. Juno represents the partnership energy in terms of committments and the boundaries we have with the ‘other’ person. This can be romantic or business partnerships where our attention is drawn to the boundaries we create or the ones we need to create to maintain a healthy balance. This looks like, Pallas is sending swiftly her cool reason and warrior spirit to help us establish healthy boundaries which prevents us being suppressed by people who tend to abuse their authority by keeping us ‘in our place’.

In the warrior postures in yoga, a great deal of the strength that comes from the posture comes from keeping the heart area open – in daily life this applies equally too… In keeping our heart centres open, balanced and grounded, we banish fear and supression and tune into the protectice energy of love. In opening our heart centres, we also learn how to establish healthy boundaries, not out of fear but out of love for ourselves and for others that we interact with.

Coincidentally (or not), the song playing as I write about those asteroids is Bob Marley’s ‘Get up Stand up’.

Most people think,
Great god will come from the skies,
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. jah!

Get up, stand up! (jah, jah! )
Stand up for your rights! (oh-hoo! )
Get up, stand up! (get up, stand up! )
Don’t give up the fight! (life is your right! )
Get up, stand up! (so we can’t give up the fight! )
Stand up for your rights! (lord, lord! )
Get up, stand up! (keep on struggling on! )
Don’t give up the fight! (yeah! )

The eclipse plants the seeds that will start to grow over the course of the coming year.

Solar eclipse conjunct natal Sun – 15th January 2010

A solar eclipse is like a super powered new Moon. Some people say you have to be in its path to feel its effects, you have to be able to actually see the eclipse, but I have found the effects to be profound even when I cannot see it in the sky above me. A new Moon marks new beginnings, or new chapters in current stories. It plants a seed for future development. A new Moon being a solar eclipse gives this new chapter a lot more emphasis and power. When an eclipse falls on the natal Sun, it usually marks a major year of importance in some way. The natal Sun rules our life force, our ego and our life goals. The Sun is the major power and life giver in our solar system, so it’s one of the most important planets. So, an eclipse on the natal Sun will mark a year of major change in the life, turning points. With a solar eclipse, these changes are more likely to be new beginnings, usually in ways relating to the house the natal Sun falls in, the house/s it rules, the aspects it makes to natal planets as well as aspects to transiting planets.

In my case, the Solar eclipse on my natal Sun had transiting Venus also conjunct. This could bring in an energy of Venusian issues such as money, love, romance, relationships and harmony. The Sun also rules men, so these issues for me could involve men in some way. With Venus involved, it was highly likely there would be a romance or some form of relating at some point, Venus also rules my natal 5th and 10th houses.

The eclipse was also square to my natal Chiron, which would bring an intense focus on my own inner issues of wounding and healing. My Chiron represents my own wounded self worth, and self image, and this eclipse is highlighting this by a challenging square aspect. Squares really grab our attention, it causes discomfort or a build up of energy so much that we have to take steps to resolve and integrate the energies involved in the square. This eclipse highlighted my childhood wounds and issues that may previously have been buried just beneath the surface, initially causing me some pain, as I saw the issues of wounded self worth coming to light. When these issues consciously surface, pain can result, but through self acceptance, learning and some self nurturing through taking time to understand my own inner process, I could heal these wounds that would otherwise continue to affect everyday life. Issues hidden in the unconscious have a tendency to creep into daily life, trying to find a way to express and release themselves, working through projection onto the surrounding environment and people in it.

Solar return year 2010 – eclipse conjunct natal Sun

Leo rising, solar eclipse conjunct Venus

The ascendant falls in the 8th house in Leo This is a year of complete transformation, the Ascendant falls in my natal house of transformation and other people’s money and things of true spiritual value. I started the year as an unemployed person, and nearly without a place to live. Through a fortunate stroke of luck, my employers laid me off unfairly, so I decided to take them to task, primarily to teach them not to treat people in that way, but as I got advice it turned out that I could get a fair sum of money from them. I got this money some months later.

A few things happened in this solar return – there was a north node solar eclipse on my natal Sun. When a solar eclipse conjuncts our natal Sun, this usually brings big changes to the areas ruled by the natal Sun, as well as the house the natal Sun falls in and any relating aspects to the Sun. My Sun is in the 2nd house, and rules the 8th. The 2nd house rules money, our valuables, self worth, while the 8th rules other people’s money, spouse’s money, inheritance and tax, sex, loans and transformation, Scorpionic issues. At the start of the year, I received a sum of money from ‘other’ people, (more on the effect of eclipses in the eclipse section). Another indicator of the money that shows in the Solar Return chart is Venus conjunct Sun, this is because transiting Venus was conjunct the Solar eclipse, therefore conjunct my natal Sun. Venus is also the traditional ruler of money, luxuries, as well as love, relationships and harmony. These also fall in the SR 6th house of day to day work, general chores, health and service.

Another 6th house relationship that manifested in my life at the start of the year was a complete new outlook on my own health and habits, I dropped all the unhealthy habits that I had, I stopped smoking and even stopped the one glass of wine per week that I used to have. I just felt like feeling healthy and fresh, and found the bad habits very easy to drop.

Sun conjunct Venus in my solar return can represent a romance. Sun is the traditional ruler of males; the man in a woman’s chart. Venus rules females and love. Another clue for romance is the Descendant in the SR chart falls on my natal Venus/Mercury – these rule my natal 5th and 7th houses, and the SR Sun/Venus is also quite close to the SR Descendant angle. I have had romance this year, one happening shortly after my birthday, nothing long lasting though.

The start of the year gave me a feeling of a complete new, fresh start in my life. The song, ‘Dog Days’ by Florence and the Machine was playing which was very appropriate for the energy that I have been feeling throughout this whole year. It felt like things could finally start to move in a positive direction for me, like the light at the end of a long tunnel. Mars in the SR chart was also in the first house, trine the Midheaven. This can suggest that I would be very action orientated and assertive. This action orientated behaviour is directed to my career, career goals, and how I present myself in public. The Leo rising also suggests a year in which I am ‘on show’ somehow, almost like being famous as Leo rules showmanship. It can also mean this year I will find it easier to express myself and my inner creativity. I was given a position of Moderator for an Astrology forum that I visit, which brought me more into the ‘limelight’ at the start of the year. Towards the end of the year, about September time, I started to really have solid ideas to start up my own business giving astrology and tarot readings online and face to face. Never before had I had as much drive as I got this year, especially towards the last third of the year. The fixed ascendant quality does suggest things starting off slow, but with all the other activity in the chart, things picked up greatly towards the end of the year.

The SR Mercury conjunct Pluto could show an intense thought process, or a theme of looking deep within, doing self analysis and depth analysis, deep thinking. This combines with the SR Ascendant falling in the natal 8th house of transformation and depth analysis. It has indeed been a year of focus on transformation and self analysis. A recognition of many things that may have been unconscious, emerging into awareness for understanding, change and healing. With my natal chart, spirituality and philosophy is a major part of my life, so my self analysis during this year has deeply involved yoga and meditation. I took my first 10 day silent meditation retreat in September, when the Sun was trine to the SR Sun. This has been a major part of my transformation.

An interesting occurrence is the swapping of the Midheaven and Nadir. Natal Nadir is conjunct the SR Midheaven. My natal 9th house Pluto conjuncting the SR Nadir could show the transformation of my core values. The 4th house rules the home, innermost self, our roots, where we come from literally and metaphorically, and our early home life. Pluto rules transformation by showing us to our subconscious, clearing away old debris that no longer serves us, to make way for new energy and healing. I also worked from home on my Midheaven projects, of creating my own business and working for myself. An inner transformation (Pluto conjunct SR Nadir) has enabled me to believe in myself enough to work solidly on my goals.

Solar eclipse at 13 degrees Capricorn 4th January 2011

This is a north node solar eclipse which brings in new energies for us to work with in the future. It can also prove challenging because these are new lessons that we are learning. The ruler of the eclipse is Saturn as the eclipse falls in the sign of Capricorn. Saturn is actually square to the eclipse from 16 degrees of Libra though in exhaltation. This looks like it will be a challenging eclipse bringing about hard work, themes of duty, discipline and responsibility. As Saturn is in the sign of Libra, the themes might relate to how we treat each other, Libran values of fairness and balance in our relationships. Perhaps we will be tested in how we are responsible in our relationships, how we need to work at and with each other, how strong our values are, what our duties are… Saturn lessons can be hard for those who like an easy life, but these lessons give long term results that are long lasting and solid.

This eclipse is conjunct the asteroid Eros the god of love, erotic love. Eros represents the erotic drive to experience the divine soul through erotic love and union with another and the transformational power that can result. This energy can also be channelled through romance and creativity but it can overwhelm us if we approach it unprepared and without wisdom. This will inevitably add a certain fuel to the eclipse and give us extra drive to tackle the work indicated by the Saturn square. Perhaps this can translate to our erotic drive feeling thwarted by disciplinarian and task master Saturn, or we have to set about our our work and duties in order to tap into our erotic drive and creative resources. We have to find a way to somehow combine work and responsibility with passion and soul transformation.

Juno the Goddess of marriage and contracts is forming an opposition to Jupiter and Uranus. Juno was actually Jupiter’s wife who was committed and faithful to him, but she was also very jealous of Jupiter’s many lovers. She would often make his lovers suffer when she discovered them. So asteroid Juno is often associate with marriage and contracts as well as cruelty and abuse. Jupiter with Uranus could be bringing expansion to our ideas of freedom, unconventionality and breaking out of the status quo. This opposition could bring a focus onto thoughts of commitment vs freedom, how are we balancing our commitments with our own needs for freedom and exploration? Mercury is forming a loose t-square to Jupiter and Juno, acting in his natural role as messenger of the Gods, negotiating between Juno and Jupiter/Uranus, maybe helping then to strike a deal? Black Moon Lilith is also opposing Juno, perhaps Juno has reason to be jealous.. Lilith rules the taboo, the hidden, the forbidden love therefore the mistress so there could be issues of commitment vs the taboo.

So far there is a theme of duty and responsibility vs freedom and expansion combined with erotic drives and taboo contacts. The eclipse is also conjunct the fixed star Ascella which is said to bring lasting happiness, good fortune, gifts and influential contacts. Perhaps this will be our reward for an understanding of the lessons of the eclipse.

There is a square from Venus to Neptune/Chiron. The eclipse is actually at the midpoint of that square. This is a sign of tension that involves the planet of illusions, dreams and sacrifice currently conjuncting the asteroid of wounding and healing which is in a conflicting square with the planet of love, relationship and values. It looks like this eclipse will also bring awareness to our values and the way we relate to each other, not just in our close relationships but also with others in general and show us where we may be deceiving ourselves and others. Self deception and deliberate deception can cause wounding to ourselves and the other people involved, maybe our value system doesn’t match actuality, maybe we are involved in clandestine affairs which this eclipse can shed some light on. With Neptune involved with a square to Venus this can also inspire great creativity as well. An essence of Chiron involved with this inspiration can add a sense of poignancy to it of pain and suffering as well as sacrifice in love with Chiron leading us to our true soul source – the pain of such experiences provides us with a golden pathway to self discovery, forgiveness and healing.

Venus has an escape route straight to Jupiter/Uranus by trine. Venus trine Jupiter is usually a very beneficial aspect, even more so it seems as Jupiter is in the sign of Venus’ exhaltation. Maybe love and the taboo will be sacrificed in the name of responsibility, stability and duty, perhaps we have to sacrifice unrealistic dreams and unhealthy relationships in order to create something more stable and lasting with the work based square to Saturn.

There is also an underworld theme to this eclipse with Persephone in trine to Pluto. As the myth goes, Persephone was torn from her mother by Hades, Lord of the Underworld, also known as Pluto, and abducted to the underworld to be his Queen of the Underworld. This shows the initiatory introduction to adulthood from innocence, from girlhood to womanhood, from innocence to wisdom. Persephone travels back to the Earth and the land of her mother at the start of spring and returns to her husband Hades at the start of autumn, so she is the Goddess of the Underworld and death as well as being the Goddess of rebirth and life. With this dynamic playing a strong part in the eclipse, innocence may be replace with a journey to our own underworld of the unconscious so we may be initiated into maturity and wisdom.

Points that are hit by the eclipse, at 13 degrees Capricorn, Cancer, Aries and Libra are likely to feel the effects personally, depending on where they fall in the chart and the aspects that are made from the eclipse to the natal planets.

My solar return year – January 2010
